Lead your way conference a successWednesday, November 07, 2012
On October 25, over 80 youth from Peel Children’s Aid attended the second annual Lead Your Way conference organized by the Crown Ward Education Championship Team. “We are thrilled that more than double the amount of our youth attended over last year,” says Bryan Shone, Senior Service Manager, Permanency and co-chair of the Crown Ward Championship Team.
“We are responsible for the success of our youth and improving educational outcomes for our youth leaving care is a key priority for the agency,” says Shone. “Youth who attended the conference were given the opportunity to gain experience and resources on a variety of areas including education, employment, financial aid, and housing.”
In addition to successful breakout sessions, youth also had the opportunity to engage with guest Speaker Marc Anthony Garrett a former youth in care and motivational speaker. “The Lead Your Way conference is a great example of community collaboration,” add Bryan. Professionals from our agency, Halton and Dufferin CAS along with foster parents and colleagues from the Peel District School Board came together with the shared goal of providing opportunities for youth.
The Crown Ward Education Championship Team (CWECT) is an organization founded by the Ministry of Training for College and University (MTCU) to ensure all youths under the Crown Ward Act have an equal opportunity to pursue a post-secondary education. MTCU also helps with peer mentoring, career advisement, and financial aid. By doing so, MTCU hopes to provide youth with the essential resources needed to contribute to a successful future.
